Baking a New Beginning: Judy’s Journey from Prison to Businesswoman
In 2018, Judy became one of the first women to participate in Bomana Female Correctional Facility’s bakery program, introduced by One Tribe Ministries. Starting with lessons in basic bread loaves, Judy honed her skills, learning both with modern commercial equipment and the traditional 44-gallon drums still used in the program.

From baking in a prison yard to becoming a successful baker in her community, Judy’s journey is a testament to resilience and hope.
Since her release, Judy’s story has inspired many. Equipped with a drum gifted upon her release from prison, she baked a loaf of bread at home for her family that very day! Her baking doesn’t just support her household—it’s become a beloved part of her community, where locals purchase her handmade buns, scones, and biscuits, treats they couldn’t afford to buy from commercial shops. Now a full-time baker, Judy is also passing on these life-changing skills to her daughters, empowering the next generation with hope and opportunity.

The community are the real winners…
Judy says the bakery program taught her so much and changed her life. “I’m really happy now,” she shares. “Luke taught me baking, and it’s fun!” She’s especially thankful to PNG Corrections for the drum oven she got when released. “I went straight home, baked for my family, and started selling buns and scones. I didn’t think my life could be this good.”
“I never thought I could have a future like this. Baking gave me hope and the chance to change my life.” – Judy
