Training that builds a future for inmates in PNG's prison system. Giving more than skill - giving hope.

One Tribe Ministries in Papua New Guinea
2017: The Journey Begins
Following the Pacific Corrections Forum, where Fiji Corrections shared that “One Tribe Ministries programs have played a direct role in reducing recidivism,” the Papua New Guinea (PNG) Correctional Services approached One Tribe Ministries (OTM) in early 2017.
As a result of a meeting in PNG, a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was established between PNG Correctional Services and OTM.
Programs Introduced
Since its operations in PNG began, OTM has successfully implemented a range of skill-building programs at the men’s, women’s and youth correction facilities in Bomana, Port Moresby. These programs include welding, bakery, cooking, literacy, wood carving, mechanics, husbandry, tailoring and screen printing. These programs have not only equipped the detainees with valuable skills but also instilled a sense of hope and purpose in their lives.
2022: A Decade of Commitment
In August of 2022, the MOU with OTM was extended for an additional 10 years, demonstrating a long-term commitment to transforming the correctional system in PNG.
Looking Ahead
The opportunities for this timeframe include commercialising key prison industries such as baking, tailoring, husbandry and mechanical in Bomana, running in parallel with the upskilling of detainees (accredited where applicable), setting them up for meaningful employment or a micro business upon release.
Through partnerships with government, private enterprises, and organisations like Prison Fellowship International, OTM is part of a diverse and inclusive community dedicated to transforming detainees’ lives and reducing recidivism. This collaborative approach impacts individual detainees, correction centres and the wider PNG community.
